The Hellion and the Highlander takes place in medieval Scotland during a brief period of peace after the Crusades. The story tells of Lady Averill Montagne and Lord Kade Stewart.
The book follows Lady Averill as her father seeks a suitable husband for her while she controls her true nature. Eventually, she loses her inhibitions and becomes tired of the insults and implications that she isn’t worthy enough for and English lord to marry.
In a moment of anger she reveals her true nature to the man she has been nursing back to health, Kade Stewart. In that moment he decides that she would do well as his wife. The deal is struck and they are married. The real challenge awaits them at the Stewart family estate where wresting control from an unruly father and incorrigible brother will take more cleverness than strength.
Overall, I love the humor that Ms. Sands infuses into her books. She is very adept at vivid descriptions and engaging storylines. Her characters are always endearing. She even makes the less than honorable characters human with all of the vulnerabilities that entails. Ms. Sands is very good at providing character histories without detouring from the storyline or causing the story to stall.
The Hellion and the Highlander is offered by Avon Books courtesy of Harper Collins Publishers. The book was submitted for copyright and made available to the public in 2010. Lynsay Sands is also the author of such books as Taming of the Highland Bride and Devil of the Highlands.
