Romance with realistic themes
I am a pretty big fan of Kristan Higgins's books -- I think Catch of the Day was the last of her current titles I had to read, or at least, it was the last one in my library's ebook catalog! I've blogged before on how much I like her down-to-earth romances, and this one was no different.
One theme I have noticed in Higgins's books is that the love interest of the story is often someone the heroine has known, and usually been really good friends with, for quite some time. The challenge is often either realizing she is in love with him, or getting him to realize he is in love with her, or maybe just for them to learn to appreciate what they have in one another.
Catch of the Day was a little different. It takes place in a little fishing village, so Maggie does know Malone, but not well. She certainly had never considered him as boyfriend material, but she finds out differently over the course of the novel.
What I found especially enjoyable about this particular romance novel is that it addresses a real-life problem that I have found in relationships: great sex, poor communication. At first, the dynamite attraction is all that Maggie and Malone can find in common, especially since he is a man of few words -- literally, as you'll find if you read the novel. I'll bet Higgins had a lot of fun writing the dialogue between him and Maggie, as his seemingly die-hard dedication to one-word answers cracked me up more than once.
The book is funny, too, of course -- one of the best parts about this author is her knack for creating hilarious scenes that evoke the real-life predicaments we women often find ourselves in. For instance, an easy one: Maggie saying to a friend that she doesn't find Malone attractive at all, only to find out he is standing right behind her.
And of course, Maggie and Malone work things out in the end. I can attest that that's not always the case in those steamy relationships that lack communication and common ground, but it's well done in this novel. (Sorry, I suppose that was somewhat of a spoiler, but you already knew they would end up staying together, right? I mean, it is a romance novel.)
I just love the down-to-earth themes and the sense of humor that I can always count on in a Kristan Higgins novel!
